Welcome

Mission

Camp Smile-A-Mile’s mission is to provide year round challenging, unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young cancer patients, their families as well as young adult survivors from Alabama at no cost to the families. Our purpose is to provide these patients, families and survivors with avenues for fellowship, to help them cope with their disease, and to prepare them for life after cancer.

A Parent's Testimony:

Because of Camp SAM...

…”we have met families with all types of cancers, even some were survivors who were told they did not have a chance to live. It gives you a boost of hope, knowing that all of these  families are dealing with childhood cancer. It reminds you that there really are people that care.”

…"my children were able to meet other kids like them. When you or a brother or sister are diagnosed with cancer you have to grow up a little faster. You realize that tomorrow is not guaranteed. They were able to make friends with other kids who understand these things.”

Camp SAM is a Gold Ribbon Camp!

Camp Smile-A-Mile is a member of COCA-I (Children's Oncology Camping Association, International), whose mission is to strengthen the international community of camps for children with cancer and their families through networking, advocacy, education and other resources. COCA-I camp members proudly served the needs of 19,220 campers in 2013. In 2011, Camp Smile-A-Mile was one of the first camps to be awarded the Gold Ribbon Camp Award at the Annual COCA-I Conference.  Camp SAM met the suggested guidelines and standards for pediatric oncology member camps.  Every three years, member camps are reviewed for consideration of a renewed gold ribbon award. Camp SAM was awarded again in 2013 and is one of only 30 pediatric oncology camps that are members of COCA-I, awarded the Gold Ribbon Camp designation, an honor bestowed upon camps which demonstrate a high level of commitment to serving children with cancer and their families.
