Welcome

Mission

Camp Smile-A-Mile’s mission is to provide year round challenging, unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young cancer patients, their families as well as young adult survivors from Alabama at no cost to the families. Our purpose is to provide these patients, families and survivors with avenues for fellowship, to help them cope with their disease, and to prepare them for life after cancer.

A Parent's Testimony from some of the 2014 Camp Sessions

Because of Camp SAM...

..."my daughter smiled more and laughed more than she has in months. We were once again reminded of the genuine kindness of others during the Ride of Love experience. And we were able to re-energize before another week of chemo. Camp SAM gave us hope again. It helped us realize that weren't not alone and reminded us that there is life outside of the hospital. The staff and counselors are amazing. Thank you so very much for providing a fun-filled, relaxing weekend for my daughter and myself."

..."we had a blast and was able to spend time together as a family and time apart from the kids. My daughter smiled the whole time. We made new friends and did activities we don't usually do, we got to experience things we never have."

..."we enjoyed a great Family weekend before transplant."

..."our daughter made new friends-probably for life. Your counselors are the "very best". I don't know how you do it, but you matched perfectly the counselor for our daughter the last two years."

..."I have met a subculture that I was blissfully unaware of prior to cancer coming to our house. The staff, the activities, the fellowship, the release of being with others, that REALLY understand cannot be expressed. Watching our survivor take joy in just being kids makes it worth all we have been through. Camp SAM is all that is best about human nature and has been the brightest star in our dark sky."

Camp SAM is a Gold Ribbon Camp!

Camp Smile-A-Mile is a member of COCA-I (Children's Oncology Camping Association, International), whose mission is to strengthen the international community of camps for children with cancer and their families through networking, advocacy, education and other resources. COCA-I camp members proudly served the needs of 19,220 campers in 2013. In 2011, Camp Smile-A-Mile was one of the first camps to be awarded the Gold Ribbon Camp Award at the Annual COCA-I Conference.  Camp SAM met the suggested guidelines and standards for pediatric oncology member camps.  Every three years, member camps are reviewed for consideration of a renewed gold ribbon award. Camp SAM was awarded again in 2013 and is one of only 30 pediatric oncology camps that are members of COCA-I, awarded the Gold Ribbon Camp designation, an honor bestowed upon camps which demonstrate a high level of commitment to serving children with cancer and their families.
